Fall Into Flavor With These Foods Featuring Apples
As autumn leaves begin to paint the landscape in hues of red and gold, it’s time to celebrate the bountiful apple harvest! Apples are not only delicious but also incredibly versatile in the kitchen. We have several trees on the farm and as imperfect as they look they are sweet as can be.
Here are some ways I love to cook with apples.
Classic Apple Pie
– A timeless favorite, this apple pie recipe features tender, cinnamon-spiced apples encased in a flaky, homemade crust. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream for the perfect fall treat. You can use canned pie filling or make your own by tossing sliced and peeled apples in cinnamon, sugar, a tablespoon of flour, a pinch of salt and a little vinegar. Pile all those slices nice and high in a pie crust and top it with several pats of butter . Then top it with a second pie crust (I usually make a lattice) and bake. Usually takes about 45 minutes at 400 but watch your edges. I use this pie crust edge protector on all my pies.
Caramel Apple Nachos
– My friend’s late mama Kathy made this amazing dessert she called apple crack. It was addictive. For sure. It had tart green apples, sweetened cream cheese, caramel, heath bar crumbles. Seriously, my mouth is watering thinking about it. You can easily make a version of that by slicing green apples (keep the peels on), layering them on top of sweetened cream cheese, drizzle caramel sauce over them and top with nuts, chocolate chips, candy corns whatever your little sweet tooth desires.
Farmhouse Apple Cider
– Turn your apple bounty into a soothing cup of warm apple cider. Simmer apple juice (you can use store-bought it is super easy), cider spice mix, chai spices or pumpkin pie spice and cloves, and a squeeze of orange for a beverage that’s sure to keep you warm. I put it all in a slow cooker and just let it simmer there all evening. It also makes the house smell amazing.
Apple Walnut Salad
– For a healthy and refreshing option, try our apple walnut salad. Crisp apple slices, toasted walnuts, mixed greens, and a zesty vinaigrette make for a perfect fall salad. Add a little blue cheese or goat cheese. Mmmmmm.
Fried Apples
– My mama used to make these as a side dish for dinner and now I see them as a side at Cracker Barrel. These are soooooooooo easy and will also smell amazing while cooking and everyone will be begging to eat. Sautée butter, cinnamon and sugar over medium heat and add the peeled and sliced apples. Continue cooking them until they are no longer firm. This isn’t a long process. Just use your judgement.
Apple Sauce Cake
-This cake is So Easy and so low key. My boys love nice plain cakes like pound cake, Angel food cake and shortbread type things. This is one those unassuming but delicious desserts (also, it tastes amazing with apple butter spread on it) and it is sure to go in no time. Simple ingredients of flour, baking soda, sugar, butter, cinnamon and applesauce make it come together in a flash. Once it bakes sprinkle with a light dusting of powdered sugar and call it good.
Apple Butter for Spreading Love
– Y’all know we love our apple butter! If you don’t have a chance to make it in an open kettle you can always use a slow cooker. Apples, sugar, a little cinnamon or cinnamon oil. Boom. Cook it until is brown and pools/doesn’t run off a spoon easily. Slather it on toast, pancakes, or biscuits for a taste of homemade goodness.
