Sandy lives on the farm and bakes delicious artisan bread almost daily. It’s incredible. It’s terrible if you’re on a low carb diet though because you cannot resist the warm deliciousness that is her bread. Each day she bakes she stores her bread in fancy little bread bags. The only problem is that the bread bags break. Enter cloth bread bags.
Almost instantly the minute you put them in the bag the bag breaks. It really is no fun. That’s why this year for homemade Christmas the choice for her gift was obvious. Cloth bread bags are the answer to this problem.
I am a terrible sewer, in case you didn’t know this already from Homemade Christmas Day Seven. I am trying to get better and really do attempt it when I have the chance, but I have to admit I called in the big guns for this. My mother-in-law. She sees beautifully and was a huge help in making these.
She is working to perfect the french seam technique and tries to use it whenever she can. That is what she did on these cloth bread bags. My part in helping consisted of cutting the fabric to size, threading the ribbon through the drawstring hole and cutting and transferring the heat transfer vinyl.
We made four bags: two baguettes, one loaf and one boule (round). Phew! I’m exhausted. Just kidding. We knocked these out in 30 minutes start to finish between the two of us.
Heres what you need:
• natural fabric (like linen) – we cut out 12×24 for baguette, 18×18 for boule, 11×15 for loaf. This doesn’t have to be exact. Some loaves come out different sizes.
• heat transfer vinyl (iron on letters can be used instead)
• vinyl cutting machine to spell bread in htv (iron on letters can also be used)
• sewing machine
• scissors
• ribbon and something to thread it through the ribbon hole (I use a safety pin)
